Happy 10th, Hawaii!

After starting with a small group of just 22 nursing students in 1992, University of Phoenix's Hawaii campus (above) was officially established the next year. The campus celebrates a decade of success in 2003 with more than 1,500 students currently enrolled, and 811 graduates.

Fighting Terrorism with Information Technology

Getting a good grade on a class project is one thing, but getting recognition from the White House is quite another.

In spring 2003, 26 students at the University of Phoenix campus in Phoenix received such recognition for an information technology project inspired by the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Howard Schmidt, former White House cybersecurity advisor, called the students' work "fascinating and innovative" after reviewing a copy of the project, which was sent to Washington, D.C., by University of Phoenix instructor K.A. Vijaisimh.

Using skills learned in class, Vijaisimh's graduate-level systems analysis students identified and developed solutions for 11 key terrorist threats. A team of undergraduate students from another class continued the project by recommending the network and telecommunications architecture necessary to implement the solutions.

In a reply written on official White House stationery, Schmidt expressed confidence that some of the students' work would be "useful in the ongoing process of making Homeland Security successful."

"It's a strong testament to the students' hard work and excellent skills," notes Vijaisimh, who encountered initial reluctance to the idea.

Paul Hagert, an IT major scheduled to graduate in August, was one of the students who worked on the daunting networking analysis. "I started off thinking it was impossible," he recalls. "The scope of the project was so broad, and we only had 15 people working on it. But we divided up the different areas, and things really started coming together in about three weeks." Hagert and the other students are excited by the prospect of mentioning the project and the White House's response to current and potential employers.
