Shaq Scores a Diploma

The “real” world isn’t made up of multimillion-dollar contracts, adoring fans and private jets. And NBA star Shaquille O’Neal knows that in the real world his education will be much more important than his ability to slam-dunk. That’s why O’Neal recently added to his impressive résumé by completing his MBA in business administration from the University of Phoenix.

Towering over his fellow graduates, the Miami Heat center picked up his diploma during commencement ceremonies at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif. “Someday I might have to put down a basketball and have a regular 9-to-5 like everybody else,” he commented, adding that his master’s degree means more to him than the fairy-tale life of being a professional basketball player.

To complete his degree, O’Neal combined classroom work with online classes, and he might even go back for another degree in criminal justice. O’Neal’s post-basketball aspirations include becoming a police chief or sheriff, and he wants to ensure he has the education for the job. Until then, O’Neal feels that his master’s degree “solidifies that I’m a businessman.” Watch out, business world!
